Georgia & Robert Cox Donate 1877 Knapp House to support CARI’s Returning Veteran Farming Project
On Friday, June 17, 2011, Georgia and Robert Cox delivered the Deed to the Historic 1877 Knapp House to Mahlon Clements, President of Clements Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) at their Farm on Point Salubrious. The House is on the Historic Register. The property was sold at auction in September.
Clements Agricultural Research Institute, Inc. is a Sec. 501(c)(3) not- for-profit Corporation which owns Iroquois Farm, a Certified Organic Farm On the St. Lawrence River in the Town of Lisbon. The Institute has operated a commercial garden and crop farm since 1999, and has provided education and conducted research on Organic and Sustainable Farming and. It also operates the “Country Garden Restaurant” which features healthy organic vegetables from the farm, and “The Tilden Stage Inn B&B”, which provides lodging for tourists and those wishing to visit the farm.
In March of 2011, CARI, with the Support of the Rodale Institute of Pennsylvania, and the Farmer-Veteran Coalition of California embarked upon a fund raising campaign to develop an extended “Hands On” training program focusing on Returning Veterans who have an interest in being farmers, with specific emphasis on Organic and Sustainable farming. It is expected that several thousand veterans will be returning through Fort Drum starting later this year, and there are very few educational programs available for them to learn about Organic and Sustainable farming.
The Gift from Georgia and Robert Cox was the first major gift from local residents, but it is hoped that others wishing to help our returning veterans will also take this opportunity to support the project. All those contributing, or donating to support the Project will receive one year complimentary Membership in CARI, and a tax deductible receipt. For more information on how to make a Donation to the Project, please call 315-323-1905 or contact CARI at mclements@cariorganic.org.
Please take some time to browse through our pages for more information about each of our programs and new projects and events. Your feedback and suggestions are always welcome, and of course if you, too, are interested in creating a better quality of life in our area, and in general, we would be more than happy to welcome you as a member of CARI! Forms are available here.
CARI is now sponsoring the Returning Veterans Farm Project with the support of the Rodale Institute. At present there are very few opportunities for Veterans to receive information and instruction about Sustainable farming. There is one program operated by the Farmer-Veteran Coalition (www.farmvetco.org) which offers retreats and seminars around the US. It is based in Davis, California. CARI has been in contact with the Executive Director of this organization and will be working with them to develop comprehensive programs. The Farmer-Veteran Coalition has been preliminarily funded by the US Department of Agriculture. A short movie is available on line telling of the need for this program for Returning Veterans. www.walkyourtalk.tv/A-Greater-Mission. See complete details in the events section.
